Lee Harding, B.Sc., Ph.D., R.P.Bio.

Areas of Expertise       International Experience Publications

Lee Harding has a B.Sc. in Wildlife Management from the University of California (1970), a Ph.D. in Biodiversity from Gifu University in Japan (2002) and is a Registered Professional Biologist (R.P.Bio.) in British Columbia.

After guiding for big game in northern British Columbia, he began consulting in wildlife ecology in 1972, studying habitats and behaviour of furbearers, ungulates and large carnivores in relation to disturbances in forest and tundra ecosystems. These studies include live capture and radio-telemetry, mark and recapture population studies (muskrats, mink, grizzly bears), habitat analysis (ungulates, furbearers, large carnivores) and behavioural response to industrial development (Peary caribou, muskoxen, grizzly bears).

In 1976 Harding joined Environment Canada as a senior biologist in Edmonton, moving to increasingly responsible positions as a science manager in Yellowknife, North Vancouver, and Delta (Alaksan National Wildlife Area), B.C. During this time he maintained a part-time business as a science writer and educator. With the Environmental Protection Service (1976-1994), he:

bulletdeveloped a new marine biological assessment program for the Arctic
bulletmanaged marine science assessments that demonstrated the need for improved waste treatment of pulp mills and control of organic contaminants
bulletled national development of federal policy for marine environmental quality
bulletled interdepartmental development of a marine ecosystem monitoring program and a marine ecosystem classification system for Canada’s marine regions
bulletinitiated the State of Environment Reporting program in Canada
bulletcoordinated interdepartmental assessment of the impact of oil spills on the marine environment and coastal resources
bulletled a science assessment of biodiversity for British Columbia and Yukon
bulletadvised the British Columbia government on State of Environment reporting, and on biodiversity guidelines for forest management.

With the Canadian Wildlife Service (1994-1997), in addition to his research on contaminants in marine and aquatic ecosystems and leading a science assessment of ecosystem response to climate change in British Columbia and the Yukon, Harding headed sections responsible for:

bullet wildlife toxicology
bullet ecosystem planning
bulletland claims negotiations
